There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from doing everything you’re told and still feeling behind.
This post is for the people who are trying to understand what’s happening in their own bodies—while hitting the wall of frustration as they get nowhere. You keep adjusting your diet, adding supplements, pulling foods back out, trying to do the “right” thing. You wake up already tired. You feel reactive to foods that never used to bother you. You've begun to notice rashes, inflammation, strange sensitivities, and a system that never quite turns off? You love your partner deeply, but don’t have the bandwidth to listen to one more story at the end of the day. And maybe you feel guilty about the exhaustion and even more confused by it.

What you’re experiencing isn’t a lack of discipline or motivation. It’s not because you haven’t found the perfect plan yet. In many cases, it’s because your system is carrying more than it can process—and no one has helped you understand how your body actually works.
This is the moment I stopped when I asked what else I should do, and started asking a different question: what is my biology asking for?
Here’s where science—not advice—starts to matter.
Why Advice Can Feel Like Too Much
Every recommendation has a cost. It's just not financial—it's cognitive.
Every “do this,” “avoid that,” “track this,” “optimize here” requires attention, decision-making, follow-through, and recovery. For some people, that load is manageable. For others, it’s overwhelming before the advice even reaches the body.
Psychological research has long shown that under stress, working memory capacity drops, making it harder to integrate new information or follow multi-step instructions. As Daniel Kahneman explains in Thinking, Fast and Slow, when cognitive load increases, the brain defaults to shortcuts—not because it’s lazy, but because it’s trying to conserve energy. This is when you make mistakes at your keyboard, you forget that your kid had an appointment, and you completely overlook that the dog needs another bag of food. It's all too much.
There’s a lot of evidence that individuals differ biologically in their sensitivity to stimulation and stress. We can't wait to sit and watch Netflix's new show with Alex Honnold climbing fearlessly up a skyscraper, wondering why and how he can do that. (It's in his genes!) Research in behavioral genetics and neurobiology has demonstrated that variations in genes related to dopamine and norepinephrine signaling influence attention, emotional reactivity, and susceptibility to overload—especially under chronic stress.
In other words, when your system is already under strain, more advice doesn’t help. It floods.
A Client Story
A client I worked with recently—I’ll call him Erik—came to me convinced he was “bad at health.”
He had done everything he was supposed to do. Clean eating. Supplements. Protocols. Coaching. Each new approach worked briefly, then collapsed under its own weight. He told me he felt anxious just opening his notes app, where lists of rules lived unfinished.
What struck me wasn’t a lack of commitment. It was how quickly his system became overwhelmed.
When we looked at his DNA, we saw markers associated with heightened stress reactivity and slower dopamine clearance—patterns often linked to increased sensitivity and decision fatigue. Translation: his brain worked harder to process information and tired more quickly.
Nothing was wrong with him.
His body wasn’t resisting change—it was protecting itself from overload.
Once we reduced inputs and built plans that required less mental bandwidth, things shifted. Not dramatically. Quietly. The avoidance eased. Progress stopped feeling heroic and started feeling sustainable.
Not because he tried harder—but because the plan finally fit his biology.
Why “Simple” Isn’t Simple for Everyone
We love to say “keep it simple,” but simplicity is super subjective.
Some people regulate through structure. Others feel trapped by it. Some thrive with detailed plans. Others shut down when there are too many instructions—even good ones. There are plenty of ways to meditate, but with some people, that doesn't work at all.
DNA helps explain why.
Genetic differences influence attention, stress tolerance, novelty sensitivity, and how easily the brain tips into overwhelm. When advice ignores these differences, it can unintentionally overload the very people who are trying the hardest to follow it.
And then they’re told they’re resistant, unmotivated, or not committed enough. You know who you are.
What DNA Changes
DNA can suggest what to do, but I find its adherence is where we fall short. It also explains how your system typically responds.
It can shed light on why:
Too many options feel paralyzing
Tracking creates anxiety instead of clarity
Rigid routines work briefly, then fall apart
“Helpful” advice makes you feel worse
In my own life, this understanding reframed patterns I’d spent years trying to outgrow, my hyperfocus, intensity, addiction, and the way information can feel both energizing and exhausting. These are not flaws, but traits with context.
In my work with clients and students, I see the relief that comes when people realize they’re not failing—they’re mismatched. They have no idea what their DNA is, so they can't respond meaningfully.
What Actually Helps
Health doesn’t improve when people collect more information. It improves when the information they’re using is metabolizable—mentally and physically. Physically is very important, much more than I even considered.
This means fewer rules. Slower pacing. Permission to stop before overwhelm sets in. And a shift away from judging responses the body never volunteered.
When people understand their biology, they stop fighting themselves. Decisions get quieter. Progress becomes steadier. You begin to feel better and stay calm.
A Big Question
If advice feels overwhelming right now, it may not be because you’re doing it wrong. It may be because it was never designed for your system in the first place.
So instead of asking, What else should I be doing?
try asking: What has my body been managing all along—and how can it carry less?
That question alone can change everything.
