Dysauto—what?
Sometimes they laugh, politely, like they think they misheard. Sometimes they ask if it’s an autoimmune condition. Sometimes they ask if it’s anxiety. Often, they ask me to explain it — and then I realize they don’t actually know what the autonomic nervous system is at all.
And honestly? Why would they? Even though we've all learned about it in 9th-grade biology, yet, that was a long time ago!
In today's wellness culture, we’re taught about the brain. We’re taught about the immune system. We’re taught about the heart. But the system that quietly regulates heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, temperature, vision, breathing, sleep, and threat response — the system that keeps us alive without asking for permission — is almost never discussed.
That system is the autonomic nervous system.
And when it becomes dysregulated, life changes in ways that are difficult to describe — and even harder to believe.
What Dysautonomia Actually Is (In Plain English)
Dysautonomia isn’t a single disease. It’s an umbrella term for conditions involving malfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), dysautonomia occurs when the ANS fails to adequately regulate involuntary bodily functions — especially under stress or positional change.
This isn’t rare.
It’s just underdiagnosed.
Research published in Clinical Autonomic Research estimates that millions of people worldwide experience autonomic dysfunction, many without a formal diagnosis. Women are disproportionately affected, particularly after viral illness, prolonged stress, trauma, or physiological shock. After spending hours in forums and reading lengthy histories from undiagnosed women, I see this over and over again: doctors are clueless!
When your ANS is compromised, your body loses its ability to smoothly adapt. Instead of regulating automatically, it overreacts — or shuts down.
Which is why:
• a car passing too fast can feel like a threat
• a warm drink can trigger heart palpitations
• perfume can feel intolerable
• digestion becomes unpredictable
• sleep fragments
• vision blurs
• exhaustion feels existential
To someone without dysautonomia, these triggers sound ridiculous.
To someone living inside it, they are real.
“But You Look Fine”
This is where dysautonomia becomes especially isolating.
Because it’s invisible.
There’s no cast. No scar. No obvious marker. Yet studies using heart rate variability (HRV), tilt-table testing, and autonomic reflex screens consistently show measurable dysfunction in people who experience it.
The Cleveland Clinic notes that dysautonomia symptoms often fluctuate daily — which makes patients appear inconsistent or unreliable, reinforcing stigma and misunderstanding.
Some days I feel okay.
Some days I can walk my dogs slowly.
Some days I can write.
And then — without warning — my system spikes.
A sound.
A smell.
A temperature shift.
Eye strain.
Digestion.
Suddenly I’m back in bed, shaking, heart racing, vision fuzzy — not because I’m fragile, but because my nervous system has lost its buffering capacity.
This isn’t psychological weakness.
It’s physiology.
Why So Many People Don’t Recognize It
Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Modern culture trains us to override the autonomic nervous system — not support it.
We applaud:
• productivity over pacing
• stimulation over regulation
• optimization over rest
• resilience over recovery
But the ANS doesn’t respond to mindset. It responds to safety cues.
Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory, now widely supported in neuroscience literature, explains that the nervous system constantly scans for safety or threat — not consciously, but biologically. When safety is absent for too long, regulation collapses.
Dysautonomia isn’t a personal failure.
It’s a system that has been pushed past its limit.
Why Diagnosis Is So Hard
Many physicians receive minimal training in autonomic disorders. According to a review in The Journal of Neurology, dysautonomia patients often wait years for an accurate diagnosis, cycling through labels like anxiety, burnout, IBS, or psychosomatic illness.
This delay worsens outcomes.
Not because dysautonomia is progressive by nature — but because invalidated nervous systems don’t heal.

What Living With It Has Taught Me
I no longer assume what should be manageable.
I don’t argue with my body.
I don’t force optimism.
I don’t chase normalization.
Instead, I aim for neutrality.
Neutrality is where the nervous system softens.
Neutrality is where threat signals quiet.
Neutrality is where healing actually begins.
This has meant:
• slow mornings
• eating like clockwork
• eliminating stimulants, even my decaf English Breakfast tea can set me off!
• walking with my dogs, alone
• limiting conversation when words feel heavy
• spending time with people who don’t need explanations, or even know my history
None of this is glamorous.
All of it is evidence-based.
