Recently, I read an essay by @Scottbaker that stayed with me longer than most things I come across on Substack. Not because it was loud or provocative, but because it articulated something I'm witnessing in many of us, and I think we are already feeling in our bodies. He calls it The Acceleration Decade, and his central idea is that technology is compressing time. Not in the literal, physics-based sense, but in the way we experience life. The distance between wanting something and receiving it is shrinking at a pace that is difficult to comprehend, let alone integrate.
He explains that, historically, natural buffers allowed humans to adapt to change. Invention took time. Adoption took even more time. Those delays gave individuals and societies the opportunity to adjust psychologically, emotionally, and structurally. But now, those buffers are gone. Innovation is compounding on itself, and adoption is nearly instantaneous. What once took decades now happens in months, sometimes weeks. We are living inside that compression.
I believe he is absolutely right about this.
But there is a critical layer missing from the conversation, and it is the one I see every single day in my work.
The nervous system.
The human nervous system did not evolve for this pace. It evolved in environments where stress appeared in bursts and then resolved. A threat would arise, the body would mobilize, and then the system would return to baseline. That return is not optional; it is essential. It is how the body recovers, integrates, and prepares for what comes next.
When that recovery does not happen, stress accumulates.

the wear and tear on the body that builds when the stress response is activated repeatedly without sufficient recovery. This is not theoretical. It is measurable. It affects cardiovascular health, immune function, cognitive clarity, and emotional regulation.
Now place that biology inside a world that never stops stimulating it.
We are constantly receiving input. Messages, notifications, headlines, expectations, decisions. Technology has not only compressed time; it has also eliminated many of the natural pauses that once allowed the nervous system to reset. The result is that many people live in a state of low-grade activation, often referred to as sympathetic dominance. The body is not in full panic, but it is not at rest either. It is bracing, continuously.
And over time, that becomes exhausting, I mean, really exhausting, you know what I'm talking about.
I am seeing this in real time with all my students and clients.
Over the last year, there has been a significant increase in the number of people attending my classes and reaching out for one-on-one work. It is not a subtle shift. It's easily a 180 percent increase; we have hit a solid brick wall. These are not people casually interested in mindfulness. These are high-functioning individuals who have built successful lives and are now finding that something within them is no longer keeping pace with the demands of those lives.
They are not tired in the way that sleep fixes.
They are tired in their nervous systems.
At the same time, I have seen a parallel increase in the use of the tools I teach. Breathwork practices, guided regulation exercises, and simple techniques designed to help the body come out of activation and return to a more stable state. People are not just curious about regulation anymore. They are actively seeking it, often in moments of overwhelm when they feel their system tipping.
This is not a trend. It is a signal.
Scott Barker outlines several ways to prepare for the future, including slowing down, building depth, and training the nervous system. I appreciate his work, and I am genuinely grateful for the clarity he brings to a complex moment. But if I were to reorganize his list, I would move one element to the very top.
Nervous system regulation.
Not as one recommendation among many, but as the foundation on which all other recommendations are possible.
There is a tendency right now to reduce nervous system work to a set of practices, ha! Meditation, breathing exercises, time in nature. These are valuable, and I teach them myself. But they are often misunderstood as quick interventions rather than what they actually are.
They are ways of living. I want you to read this twice:
You cannot simply insert a breathing exercise into a life that is fundamentally overwhelming and expect the system to stabilize.
Why Your Nervous System Doesn’t Heal Through Control
Somewhere along the way, we collectively decided that a well-regulated human is simply a well-controlled one.
You cannot meditate your way through conditions that consistently signal threat to the body. Regulation is not something you layer on top of a fast life. It is something you build into the structure of your life itself.
I learned this not through theory, but through experience.
After years of teaching stress management and working with people in high-pressure environments, my own nervous system collapsed.
Dysautonomia changed the way my body functioned in ways I could not ignore. Heart rate, blood pressure, energy regulation—systems that had always operated quietly in the background—became unstable. Activities that once felt normal required careful pacing. Exercise disappeared. My world became smaller.
At first, I experienced this as failure.
Over time, I came to understand it differently.
My body was not failing. It was refusing to continue operating under conditions it could no longer sustain.
That refusal forced a kind of recalibration that I would not have chosen voluntarily. It required me to slow down in a way that was not negotiable. And in that slowing down, I began to see more clearly what regulation actually means.
It is not control.
It is relationship.
It is the ongoing process of creating conditions where the body feels safe enough to function well.
Scott Barker writes that the future will reward qualities like judgment, taste, storytelling, and moral reasoning. I agree with him completely. But those qualities do not emerge in an overloaded system. They require reflection, and reflection requires space. Space, in turn, requires a nervous system that is not constantly managing incoming demands.
Without that, acceleration does not produce clarity.
It produces anxiety.
If we are serious about preparing for the future, then the preparation cannot stop at productivity or skill-building. It must include an understanding of how the body responds to stress, how it signals overload, and what it needs in order to recover.
This means becoming intentional about the environments we spend time in, the amount of information we consume, and the people we surround ourselves with. It means learning to pace energy rather than constantly expanding output. It means recognizing that calm is not something we generate in isolation, but something our nervous system recognizes in relationship and environment.
These are not soft skills.
They are biological requirements.
I am grateful for Scott Barker’s contribution to this conversation. His work highlights the speed at which our world is changing and the need to adapt. I would simply suggest that before we focus on adapting our skills to match that speed, we consider whether our nervous systems are capable of living inside it.
Because what I am seeing, more and more, is that when the nervous system is ignored, people do not just become overwhelmed.
They collapse.
Quietly, often invisibly, while still appearing functional on the outside.
And then they try to solve that collapse with more effort, more information, more tools.
When what they actually need is something far more fundamental.
They need to feel safe again.
So the question I would offer is this:
If the next decade continues to accelerate at a pace we can barely comprehend, what kind of nervous system will you need—not just to keep up, but to remain steady enough to choose how you want to live inside it?
