The people who fall apart are rarely the ones you expect.
They are not the ones who look fragile or uncertain. They are the ones who have been holding everything together for years. The dependable ones. The ones who manage complexity, deliver under pressure, and rarely let anything drop. They are often admired for their capacity, their discipline, and their ability to keep going no matter what is happening around them.
I know this pattern intimately because I lived inside it for a long time.
When I look back now, I don’t see weakness anywhere in my collapse. I see endurance without interruption. I see a nervous system that adapted over and over again to meet demand, but never had the space to fully recover from what it was carrying. I see someone who was incredibly capable and incredibly unaware of the cost of that capability.
For years, I believed that managing stress was the same thing as resolving it. I used the tools that many of us rely on—meditation, breathwork, mindset shifts, discipline. All of those things supported me in important ways, but none of them addressed what was happening underneath. My nervous system was still accumulating load, even as I was functioning at a high level.
This is where I think we need to be more honest about what healing actually requires.
There is a growing body of work in the trauma field, including voices like Amy Apigian, that is pointing to something we have overlooked for far too long. Trauma is not simply a story we tell ourselves or a belief we can reframe. It is a physiological experience that lives in the body. When that experience is not fully processed, it does not disappear. It stays active in the system, shaping how we respond, how we regulate, and how much stress we can tolerate before something begins to break down.
What I see so often, especially in high-achieving individuals, is a tendency to try to outperform what the body is holding. We become incredibly skilled at managing perception. We can appear calm, organized, and in control while internally the system is working overtime to maintain that state. Meditation becomes something we do to stay functional rather than something that allows the body to complete a stress response. Breathwork becomes another tool in the productivity stack rather than a pathway into deeper regulation.
Over time, that approach creates a very specific kind of strain.
I see this clearly in my work with professionals, particularly attorneys. They are trained to operate in high-pressure environments where precision and performance are non-negotiable. They carry enormous responsibility, often with very little margin for error. What is remarkable is not that they struggle, but how long they are able to maintain that level of output before their bodies begin to push back. When they finally reach out, it is often because something has shifted in a way they can no longer ignore. Sleep is disrupted, anxiety becomes constant, energy becomes unpredictable, and there is a sense that the system is no longer responding the way it used to.
They are not failing. Their bodies are signaling.
What has changed in recent years is that I am now seeing this same pattern in much younger populations.
I recently worked with a twenty-year-old woman who was experiencing debilitating anxiety. This was not occasional stress or situational overwhelm. This was anxiety that interfered with her ability to move through her daily life. She was intelligent, capable, and deeply aware of what she was experiencing, but her nervous system was operating as though it was under constant threat. She had not had decades of high-pressure work behind her. What she had was something different.
She had grown up in an environment of continuous stimulation.
This is the layer that we are only beginning to understand. The amount of time spent on phones, the constant engagement with digital environments, and the absence of sustained, in-person connection is reshaping how the nervous system develops and functions. When interaction is primarily mediated by screens, the body has fewer opportunities to engage in real-time social interaction. Facial cues, tone of voice, subtle shifts in energy—these are the signals that help the nervous system determine safety. When those signals are reduced or replaced, the system has less information to work with, and it often compensates by staying in a more activated state.
Over time, this can erode social empathy and increase internal stress, not because people don’t care, but because their nervous systems are not receiving the input they need to feel grounded in connection.
This is not just a behavioral issue. It is a biological one.
From a physiological perspective, we can understand this through concepts like allostatic load, a term developed by Bruce McEwen to describe the cumulative burden of chronic stress on the body. Every time the system adapts to stress without fully recovering, it adds to that load. The HPA axis, which governs our stress response, becomes increasingly taxed as it cycles through activation without sufficient resolution. Over time, this can lead to dysregulation, where the system no longer moves fluidly between states of activation and rest.
Genetics can influence how this process unfolds. Variations in genes like COMT, which affect how quickly stress hormones are broken down, can shape how long the body stays activated after a stressor. Some individuals clear stress more efficiently, while others hold onto it longer. However, even with these differences, the broader principle remains the same. A system that is constantly engaged without adequate recovery will eventually reach a point where it can no longer sustain that pattern.
What makes this particularly difficult is that the early stages of this process are not obvious.
You are still functioning. You are still meeting expectations. You are still able to deliver results. From the outside, nothing appears to be wrong. Internally, however, the system is working harder and harder to maintain that appearance. The shift only becomes visible when the capacity to compensate begins to diminish, and by that point, it can feel as though the change happened suddenly.
In reality, it has been developing over time.
What I have come to understand, both personally and professionally, is that regulation is not something we can afford to treat as optional. It is not something we layer on top of an already full life. It has to become part of the foundation. This requires a shift in how we think about productivity, success, and even healing itself. It asks us to recognize that rest is not the absence of effort, but a necessary component of sustained capacity. It asks us to create space for the nervous system to complete stress cycles rather than constantly interrupting them with more input.
It also asks us to reconsider our relationship to connection.
We do not regulate in isolation. The nervous system is designed to co-regulate, to find safety and stability in the presence of others. When that element is missing or diminished, it becomes significantly harder for the system to return to baseline. This is why community, in its truest sense, is not a luxury. It is part of the regulatory process.
When I look at the people who are struggling the most right now, I do not see a lack of strength. I see a pattern of sustained effort without sufficient recovery, combined with environments that do not support true regulation. The solution is not to push harder or to find better ways to manage stress. It is to fundamentally change how we relate to our nervous systems and to the lives we are building around them.
So the question becomes not how much more you can handle, but how much your system has already been carrying.
