I just started a new CalmLab cohort. We’re in week three now, which means the first two weeks have been about orientation—not to techniques, but to each other. Before we ever talk about breath or regulation, I want to understand what stress actually looks like in my students’ lives.
What brings them into the room.
What’s already breaking down.
I want them to sense regulation in the room, starting with me, and then from the room.
Last week, one of my students shared a story that nearly every woman in the room agreed with.
She works in technology, which, as you know, is a fast-paced, high-burnout field. I can tell that she’s fast, capable, and wants to rise to the top, and she is also surrounded almost entirely by male colleagues. Her work is relentless. The expectations are implicit. Mistakes are remembered. Success is quietly absorbed as the baseline.
“When I’m under pressure,” she said, “I speed up. I try to solve everything at once. And then I make a mistake—and something in me turns.”
What turns isn’t anger. It’s an internal voice—sharp, urgent, corrective. Work faster. Don’t mess this up. You should know better. She compensates by pushing harder. Meetings bleed into evenings. Dinner becomes optional. The house starts to unravel. The refrigerator empties. Her relationship gets whatever energy remains, which is little to none.
By the time she sits in Calm Lab, she isn’t just stressed at work.
Her entire life is out of rhythm.
This is not an unusual story. Every student I meet has something similar. All of this makes me think about where we are heading as a society.
Stress at Work Is Not Gender-Neutral
Women report higher levels of burnout than men across nearly every sector, but the gap widens significantly in high-pressure, male-dominated fields like technology. According to large workforce analyses—including McKinsey’s Women in the Workplace reports—women are consistently more likely to report feeling burned out, emotionally exhausted, and under-recognized, even when performance metrics are equal or higher.
What’s striking is not just the volume of stress, but how it’s carried.
Men under pressure are more likely to externalize—disengage, compartmentalize, or push back. Women are more likely to internalize—tightening, self-monitoring, overworking, and self-correcting. The stress doesn’t end when the workday does. It follows them home.
By the time my student leaves work, her nervous system is still mobilized—still solving, still scanning, still bracing, there is nothing calm about her, nothing regulated.
When the Nervous System Never Downshifts
This is where stress management stops being a mindset issue and becomes a physiological one.
From a polyvagal perspective, her experience makes sense. Polyvagal theory, developed by neuroscientist Stephen Porges, explains how the autonomic nervous system shifts between states of safety, mobilization, and shutdown. In high-demand environments, many women live in a near-constant state of sympathetic activation—the “get it done” stress state.
That state is incredibly effective in short bursts. It is unsustainable as a lifestyle.
When the nervous system doesn’t downshift:
attention narrows
mistakes increase
self-criticism intensifies
basic life maintenance feels overwhelming
This is not a failure of discipline. It’s a system that hasn’t been given a signal that it’s safe to rest.
The Inner Critic Is Not a Character Flaw
One of the most painful parts of my student’s story isn’t the workload—it’s the voice that appears when she falls short.
The inner critic is often mistaken for motivation. In reality, it’s a stress response. Under chronic pressure, the brain defaults to threat-based control. Self-criticism feels like vigilance. It feels like prevention.
But as Jon Kabat-Zinn has written for decades, mindfulness isn’t about self-improvement—it’s about befriending the moment as it is. Without that stance, attention becomes adversarial. The body stays braced. The system never recovers!
This is where many high-achieving women break—not because they can’t handle responsibility, but because they’re never taught how to come out of it.
Why Breath Matters More Than We Think
In my CalmLab, we don’t start with productivity strategies. We start with the body.
One of the first tools I teach is diaphragmatic breathing—not as a wellness trend, but as a physiological intervention. Slow, nasal, diaphragmatic breathing directly stimulates the vagus nerve, shifting the nervous system out of threat and toward regulation.
I love James Nestor’s work on breathing, which has helped bring this into mainstream awareness: how modern stress patterns shorten the breath, raise carbon dioxide intolerance, and keep the body in a low-grade state of alarm. Longer exhales, slower cadence, and nasal breathing aren’t relaxing techniques—they’re regulatory signals.
Balance Is Not a Personality Trait. It’s a Nervous System Skill.
As my students’ regulation improves, the ripple effects are practical.
She still works hard. She still solves problems. But when she makes a mistake, she recovers faster. She has enough bandwidth to eat real meals. Enough energy to keep her home functional. Enough presence to stay connected to her partner.
This is what balance actually looks like—not perfection, not constant calm, but recovery.
Stress will always be part of meaningful work. The question is whether the body knows how to come back.
For women working under sustained pressure—especially in environments that reward speed over sustainability—this isn’t optional. It’s foundational.
And it’s teachable.

(5 minutes. Use after meetings, mistakes, or at the end of the workday.)
This is not a relaxation exercise.
It’s a transition.
When to use it:
After a high-pressure meeting, after you catch a mistake, or before you walk into your evening.
How to practice:
Sit with your feet on the floor.
Let your spine be upright but not held. Unclench the jaw.Breathe in through your nose for 4.
Let the breath move low—into the ribs and belly.Exhale through the nose or softly through the mouth for 6.
Don’t force it. Let the exhale trail off.Pause briefly at the bottom of the breath.
Just long enough to notice you’re still here.Repeat for 8–10 cycles.
No counting perfectly. No fixing the breath.
If your mind jumps in:
That’s not a problem. Bring your attention back to the exhale. Longer exhales are what signal safety to the nervous system.
What this does:
Lengthening the exhale activates the vagus nerve, lowers stress hormones, and helps the body recognize that the workday—or the moment of threat—is over.
You’re not trying to calm down.
You’re teaching your nervous system how to come back.
