For years, I believed optimization was the answer.
More supplements. Better tracking. Cleaner inputs. Smarter protocols. If something felt off in my body, the solution was obvious: add, tweak, upgrade.
That logic makes sense in a culture obsessed with performance. But eventually, my nervous system made it clear — optimization wasn’t helping me heal. It was overwhelming me.
The first red flag wasn’t dramatic. It was subtle: supplements that once felt supportive suddenly made me jittery, wired, nauseous, or exhausted. A multivitamin here. A methylated B complex there. A “can’t hurt” addition to an already full stack.
Except it could hurt.
And it did.

When Optimization Turns Into Overload
One of the most misunderstood aspects of modern wellness is the assumption that more support is always better.
From a nervous system perspective, that simply isn’t true.
Take methylation, for example. Variants in genes like MTHFR affect how efficiently someone processes folate and B vitamins. For people with certain variants, taking high doses of methylated nutrients can overstimulate the nervous system — leading to anxiety, insomnia, palpitations, or mood swings rather than resilience.
This isn’t anecdotal. Research has shown that excessive methyl donors can increase excitatory neurotransmitter activity in susceptible individuals, particularly those already under chronic stress (Smith et al., American Journal of Clinical Nutrition).
Optimization culture rarely accounts for this nuance. It assumes bodies are interchangeable. Nervous systems are not.
I’ve tracked my body since 1995. Data has always been my ally. But eventually, even tracking became a threat signal. My system didn’t need more input — it needed less demand.
What Nervous Systems Actually Need (And Why Wellness Gets It Wrong)
Here’s where wellness culture often misses the mark: healing doesn’t begin with discipline.
It begins with safety.
Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory explains that the autonomic nervous system is constantly scanning for cues of safety or threat — long before conscious thought enters the picture. When the system perceives a threat, digestion slows, heart rate increases, inflammation rises, and cognitive flexibility drops.
No amount of “positive thinking” overrides that biology.
Wellness culture often promotes practices like meditation, breathwork, or cold exposure without assessing whether the nervous system is ready for them. For someone already dysregulated, even well-intentioned practices can backfire.
Yoga nidra once worked beautifully for me — until it didn’t. At a certain point, lying still with my thoughts amplified internal chaos instead of calming it. What helped instead were bottom-up interventions: craniosacral therapy, vagus nerve work, slow walking, predictable meals, and silence.
The nervous system doesn’t want to be hacked. It wants to be met.
Why DNA Changes the Stress Conversation Entirely
Stress is not just emotional. It’s biochemical.
When stress persists, detox pathways become overloaded, neurotransmitters become imbalanced, and inflammation increases. Genetic variations influence how efficiently we clear stress hormones, process neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, and respond to inflammatory signals.
This is where understanding your DNA matters — not as optimization, but as precision compassion.
Understanding genetic tendencies around detoxification, neurotransmitter metabolism, gluten sensitivity, or cardiovascular response allows interventions to become less aggressive, not more. I’ve seen clients remove a single inflammatory input — often gluten — and experience dramatic shifts in mood, digestion, and energy within weeks.
That’s not hacking. That’s listening.
Why Mindfulness Sometimes Fails — And How It Should Be Taught
This is super uncomfortable to say as a mindfulness teacher, but it matters:
Meditation is not universally regulating.
Top-down practices — like seated meditation or cognitive reframing — rely on cortical control. In dysregulated states, the body isn’t accessible through the mind alone. That’s why mindfulness must be paced, embodied, and context-aware. In my eight-week Calm Resilience System, I teach that every practice matters, but what matters most is how you are in that moment; are the body and mind in alignment? If not, choose a practice that will bring you into regulation. Is it a practice for the body or the mind?
Research in somatic psychology consistently shows that trauma and chronic stress are stored in the body, not just the narrative mind (van der Kolk, The Body Keeps the Score). Practices that ignore this can unintentionally increase distress.
True regulation happens when mindfulness meets physiology — when awareness is paired with sensation, rhythm, nourishment, and rest.
From Fixing to Listening
Optimization asks: How do I upgrade myself?
Regulation asks: What is my system asking for right now?
Regulation doesn’t demand obedience.
It doesn’t reward suffering.
It doesn’t confuse intensity with progress.
It asks us to slow down enough to notice.
To become neutral instead of hyper-vigilant.
To trade performance for presence.
That shift isn’t flashy. It won’t sell a $99 monthly protocol!
But it is how the nervous systems actually heal.
